JQC, GBI to investigate two Catoosa County magistrates

Benjamin F. Easterlin IV, chairman of the Judicial Qualifications Commission, said that the JQC and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate an alleged altercation that took place last week between two Catoosa County magistrate court judges.
Chief Magistrate Sonny Caldwell and Magistrate Anthony Peters were not at work on Friday at the Catoosa County courthouse. Caldwell and Peters were involved in a confrontation on Wednesday and Peters was removed from the courthouse in handcuffs.
The two judges are “voluntarily taking a leave” while the matter is being sorted out, said Catoosa County Attorney C. Chad Young.
The GBI is also investigating two other incidents involving Peters, said Greg Ramey, GBI assistant special agent in charge at the Calhoun office. The district attorney’s office of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit had asked the GBI to investigate one of those incidents.
Peters told the newspaper on Friday that being taken into custody was like being “kidnapped under Georgia law,” and said “in the end, the truth will come out.”
Caldwell couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.
