1:30 pm, November 9th, 2010

Non-business bankruptcies in the Atlanta area almost doubled between 2006 and 2010, according to information from the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts.

In FY 2006, Fulton County had 4.55 bankruptcy filings per 1,000 people; in FY 2010, that number had risen to 7.08. In Gwinnett, filings rose from 4.98 to 8.99 during the same time period.

Bankruptcy filings nationwide, business and personal, have risen 13.8 percent over the past fiscal year, ended Sept. 30.

The agency reported 1,596,355 filings, about 200,000 more than in FY 2009.

Non-business bankruptcies rose 14.4 percent. This is the highest number of non-business filings since FY 2005, immediately prior to the implementation of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act in Oct. 2006, according to the AO.

Business bankruptcy filings dropped slightly, by less than 1 percent, for the first time since FY 2006.
