After a service call at the Emanuel County Jail last Friday afternoon, a plumber apparently left a door open to the service area where the pipes were located, which led to a stairwell, which led to a roof, which led to six inmates escaping over the weekend, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle-Herald.
Some of the inmates were being held on serious charges, such as murder and kidnapping. Three of the inmates were caught quickly. The others remained at large into this week. The FBI offered a $5,000 reward for one of the men – charged with kidnapping for ransom.
