Governor Nathan Deal has selected a lawyer to serve as one of his state Senate floor leaders during the upcoming session.

Sen. Charlie Bethel, R-Dalton, is a human resources executive with J&J Industries and has been a member of the State Bar of Georgia since 2001. He earned his law degree from the University of Georgia.

Bethel is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee as well as the Insurance and Labor, Retirement, and Reapportionment and Redistricting committees. He is also the Deputy Whip for the Republican Caucus.

Prior to his election to the Senate in November 2010, Bethel was a member of the Dalton City Council. His district, District 54, includes Murray and Whitfield counties and parts of Catoosa and Gordon counties in northwest Georgia.

He will join Senators Rick Jeffares, R-Locust Grove, and Bill Jackson, R-Appling, as liaisons between the chamber and the Governor’s Office.

The next session is slated to start Jan. 14.
